Pre stressed concrete or PSC poles / Concrete Electric Pole (PSC Poles)

PSC is just short for pre-stressed concrete. These are very highly and durable type of poles that are fabricated from top quality concrete materials. These types of poles are a popular choice and is used extensively in electrical industry. It is used for establishing connections and fittings between various points in a power system. They are also eco-friendly and don’t cause any effect on the surroundings. Maintaining these poles can also be done very easily as much resources and time do not need to be allocated in keeping the PSC poles in top conditions.

These poles are pre-stressed using steel wires which provide additional strength to the structures that is being built. These poles are much more strong and sturdy than traditional wooden poles. That’s why we see them used everywhere nowadays and have replaced the old wooden poles. PSC poles are also specially designed to fit the various types of fittings. For this, 20 mm diameter holes are made in the poles during concreting. Also, the cross-section of these structures are always made bigger in the bottom than the top and is made rectangular in shape.

Advantages

Use of pre stress concrete (PSC poles) offer distinct advantages over ordinary reinforced concrete. These advantages can be briefly listed as followed:

•Pre-stressed concrete minimizes the effort of cracks in concrete element by holding the concrete in compression. Appearance of cracks is the most common and initial problems that arise in reinforced concrete. However, this problem is reduced hugely in PSC poles as steel wires are used which helps in holding the structures and provides additional strength.
• Pre-stressed PSC poles allows reduced beam depths to be achieved for equivalent design strengths. Hence, these structures can easily be built according to the varied necessity of the users, making them even more useful and versatile.
• PSC poles are resilient and will recover from the effects of a greater degree of over load than any other structure material. If the member is subject to overload, cracks, which may develop will close up on removal of the overload. Due to their ability to withstand additional loads, pre-stressed concrete reduces the appearance of cracks more than in other types of concretes and there is less risk of other problems occurring that happen due to cracks.
• Pre-stressed enable both entire structure element and structures to be formed from a number of precast units. e.g. segmented and modular construction.
• Lighter element permit the use of longer spanning member with higher strength to weight characteristic. These poles are easier to work on and is more durable and stronger than others.
