How can we reduce transformer noise?

2020-01-22

By now, we all know what is a transformer. We most probably even have a general idea about how important these electrical devices for our power systems. Just in case that you have forgotten, electrical transformers are the device which is used to transfer an alternating current or voltage from one electric circuit to another. Transformers work under the principle of electromagnetic induction to transfer current and voltages.

Just by knowing what is a transformer and how it works, also isn’t enough. Because there are various types of transformers and all the different types of transformers need to be used specifically according. Then only we can get the maximum out of all types of transformers and have a smoothly running power system.

However, no matter what kind of transformer they are, we surely will have heard a humming noise coming out of transformers. The humming or buzzing noise coming from transformers are simply the result of extra magnetic flux attracting or distracting the core of the transformer. Hence, the humming and buzzing can also be considered as a mechanical noise.

The transformer noise can be heard in both residential and industrial areas. Be it distribution transformers which is used nearby homes or power transformers, which are used in power plants and industrial areas, we will hear stay the noise created by transformers.

The primary reason behind creation of noise is magnetostriction. In simple words, this can be called as the extension ad contraction of the core laminations, which produce the hum during magnetization. During this process, the magnetic steel changes its shape ad dimensions. Again, when the magnetization is taken away, it goes back to its original shape. This noise can be best defined as the vibrating sound that is produced by generators and motors.

Some things that we should know about transformer noise is that it comes from the core of the device. The design of the transformer also affects the amount of noise produced. Loading these electric devices can also not make much difference in the noise. Certain adjustments can also be made in them during installation. By doing so, we reduce the noise upto certain extent. But we should not expect a major difference in doing so. In a nutshell, the thing is that the noise coming from transformers can be controlled, but cannot be completely removed.

And yes, this humming noise can be irritating. So let’s have a look at some of the precautions that we can take during installation and mounting, in order to reduce and buzz and hum.

Choose low traffic area for installation

It is very crucial to select the right area of installation. Especially in high traffic areas, the humming noise will become a problem and annoy a lot of people. Also, in quieter areas, we don’t suggest the transformers to be fit there. This is because the humming sound will be quiet loud and clear if an area’s surrounding sound is lower than the unit’s sound level. This is why it is highly recommended to maintain at least one low traffic area between the transformer and high traffic spaces in offices or residential buildings, etc.

Corners, corridors and stairwells should be avoided

Certain types of areas should be avoided while placing the transformers. We should know that certain places amplify sound more than in other places. Corridors and stairways/stairwells are a perfect example of that. Even when we just talk, we might have surely noticed that our noise becomes louder when we talk in stairwells and corridors. Also, the corners of the rooms should be avoided as much as possible. Corners of the room should not be used for setting up transformers as the room and hall corners also result in amplified sound. Hence, mounting a transformer in such places is certainly not a good idea if you are trying to avoid noise.

Mounting the unit on a solid plane

This is a very crucial one. In fact, this is one of the most crucial points that you have follow while installing transformers. It is essential that the units should only be placed in heavy and dense surfaces such as concrete walls or floors. If the mounting surface isn’t dense, like for example, tin walls and plywood surfaces, then the buzzing noise coming from the transformers will only accelerate. In some cases, due to inadequate mounting surfaces, the transformers might even make unbearable noise. It is understood that installation surfaces should be at least 10 times heavier than the unit itself.

Tighten the bolts

This is a very basic point in maintaining transformer noise. Nonetheless, people very often ignore this part when it comes to maintaining the transformer noise. We have to constantly check and make sure that the bolts and screws on the entire transformer unit have been tightened properly. These loose parts and bolts will vibrate when the transformer is working, which automatically increases the sound.

Using oil barriers

Use of oil barriers, cushion padding and other sound dampening materials is also highly encouraged to be used in transformers. These materials will help a lot in reducing the noise and control it from spreading in an annoying manner. Although these materials are unable to reduce the vibrating sound by themselves, it surely will help to reduce the frustration caused by the noise for those around.

Implementing a flexible mounting method

Using external dampeners along with implementing flexible mounting is highly effective in reducing the noise coming from the units. This method can be used while installing the transformers in walls, ceilings or frames. This process ultimately stops the metal contact between surface and the unit, resulting in controlled noise.

Apart from these, one can also choose new and advanced technology, materials, designs and installing techniques if you are looking to get as less noise as possible from the transformers. Hence, we know what is a transformer and how it should be used to get the most out of it. Now, we can even eliminate a lot of problems that might arise from the buzzing of transformers.
